Family Eye Care – Make Healthy Vision A Priority

So that you are able to maintain good eye care you should ensure that your family has access to a qualified health care provider, and that each family member has an annual eye checkup. This is particularly important for your children. As we know, children should always have regular eye examinations so as to prevent against future loss of vision, and other eye disorders.
Choosing An Optometrist To Provide Your Family Eye Care
There are many factors you should take into consideration when it comes to selecting an optometrist who you want to provide your family eye care treatment. The first question you need answered is ‘Do they treat young children?’ Many eye care professionals will treat children who are school students but are reluctant to treat toddlers and younger children. As it is extremely important to begin your child’s regular eye exams as early as one year old, you should always make sure that the optometrist you select is okay with treating children this age.
The next matter you should ask your family eye care provider is if they treat degenerative eye diseases and other vision problems for the elderly. Again, this is a rather specialized area and many optometrists do not allow for this type of eye care. If you have an aging parent living with you or you are getting along in years, you should be sure that this type of family eye care is extended. If not you may find yourself having to change eye care providers later on which can be difficult especially if you have a long history and good rapport with your current provider.
Another important question you should pose to any optometrist you are considering, is whether or not they provide advanced family eye care options. These services include lasik surgery, cataract removal, and other eye surgeries. This may not be necessary if your family’s eyes are in good health, but as it may be required some time later it is a good idea to at least inquire if this is an option your eye care provider offers.
You should also make sure that your family eye care provider is comfortable dealing with your insurance carrier. Even though most optometrists accept nearly all of the more well known carriers there is no guarantee that your insurer is on your eye care provider’s approved listing. This is especially true if you and your family are covered by a state funded insurance program because not all eye care professionals accept this type of insurance.
So if you and your family have not had your eyes tested for a few years it is strongly recommended that you visit an eye care specialist and have your eyes examined as soon as possible.
